Obituary

Dennis Knowland painted from a very early age and when he was 16 he met and was befriended by the Royal Academician, R O Dunlop. (1894-1973). In the mid 1930’s he spent a year at the Chelsea school of art where he was taught by Graham Sutherland and Robert Medley, winning a prize for Landscape painting. He first showed at the London Group and at the outbreak of World War II was earning his living in the advertising industry. At this time he also worked on book illustration and ‘Bevis at home’ by Richard Jeffries. During the war he was stationed in Scotland and met the painter Anne Redpath (1895-1965) who invited him to her studio and encouraged him to take up painting again.
After the war he obtained a government grant to continue his studies and won a place at Camberwell School of Art where his style developed. He was taught by many of the great names of the period, including Sir William Coldstream (1908-1987), Sir Lawrence Gowing (1918-1991) and Claude Rogers (1907-1979). After leaving Camberwell he worked as an art examiner in Oxfordshire, retiring in the early 1970’s. He continued to paint until his death and a memorial exhibition was held in Oxford in 1987.
Knowland was married to Irma, a costume designer and book illustrator and their daughter Mary continues the family tradition as a potter and fine painter.

Obituary

     Obituary

James George Cornish was the second son of the Rev. Charles John Cornish by his first wife, Anne Charlotte Western. Born in 1860 at Debenham, Vicarage, Suffolk, he was educated at Haileybury and Oxford, where he obtained an Exhibition at Hertford College, graduating with First Class Honours in the School of Modern History. Having taken Holy Orders he was curate at Farringdon, Berks, 1892-93, Rector of East Lockinge, Berks, 1893-1903, and Vicar of Sunningdale, Berks, from 1903 until his retirement in 1919. The rest of his life was spent at Salcombe House, Sidmouth; but although no longer in charge of a parish his activities both as a country clergyman and lover of country life continued to the very last. The long connection of his family with the parish of Salcombe Regis (now part of Sidmouth) and his position as a landowner enabled him to do much useful work for the improvement of local conditions, more particularly in the matter of pure water supply for cottages. Latterly he was an active members of the Sidmouth Urban District Council and rendered valuable service in the preservation of scenic amenity, both of cost and countryside, under the town planning scheme.

A keen naturalist, James Cornish contributed much material for the writing of his elder brother, the late C. J. Cornish. His devotion to country life and field sports, which never abated, did much to preserve that youthfulness and zest in life which brought him a host of friends. In the pulpit he had qualities of exposition and delivery which made him much sought for as a preacher.

He married in 1894, Martha, eldest daughter of Richard Foster, of Chislehurt. She died in 1936, and leaves one daughter, Miriam, wife of Edmund Page, of Ivythorn Manor, Street, Somerset.10

Obituary

One of Britain's best-known geographers, Dr. Vaughan Cornish, D.Sc., F.R.G.S, of "Inglewood," Gordon-road, Camberley, died on Saturday at the age of 85, in a Camberley nursing home. Dr. Cornish, who is survived by his widow, was famous among geographers for his studies of land and water waves. In later years he gave much of his time to the appreciation and preservation of the natural beauties of Britain. He had lived in Camberley since 1913.

He was a student of geography in all its aspects, and he was an author of ability who illustrated his works with his own sketches and photographs.

Dr. Cornish was born at Debenham Vicarage, Suffolk and was educated at St. Paul's School and at Victoria University, Manchester. He graduated with honours in chemistry in 1888 and later took the degree of D.Sc. He became Director of Technical Education to the Hampshire County Council, but after his marriage he entered the field of geographical scientific research. In 1900 the Royal Geographical Society presented him with the Gill Memorial for his research work into all types of waves, both on land and sea, on snow and sand and natural materials.

A world tour by Mr. and Mrs. Cornish in 1903 was the occasion for a great deal of important scientific work, and was followed by visits to many parts of the world. They were injured at Kingston, Jamaica, in January, 1907, when an earthquake wrecked the city and killed many of its inhabitants. A few months later they returned to Kingston to study earthquake effects. During the first world war Dr. Cornish lectured to naval and military officers on strategic geography and subsequently published a number of books. He remained an active author until recently.

The funeral took place on Tuesday at Salcombe, Devon.17
